The Highland County District Library has been advised to prepare for a reduction in funding during the state’s 2009 fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2008. The state funding of all Ohio’s public libraries has been frozen for over the last 5 years. During this time the cost of providing materials, services, programs and computers that the public requests, as well as utilities, property maintenance and insurance, has continued to rise.
In order to prepare for the difficult economic times predicted while continuing to serve the public, which is our mission, the Highland County District Libraries will change the hours that we are open to the public, beginning Monday, June 2, 2008.
This was not an easy decision to make. The Highland County District Library has served Highland County, Ohio since its beginnings in 1877. Libraries have great impact in their communities. We hope that the situation will improve and are sorry for any inconvenience this change may cause. The Highland County District Library will continue to be there for you, to provide materials, services, computers and high-speed Internet access, and we thank you for your continued patronage.

At the age of twenty-four, Marya Hornbacher was diagnosed with Type I rapid-cycle bipolar, the most severe form of bipolar disorder. This knowledge made sense of her chaotic life and let her know she was not alone in her struggle. Madness is Hornbacher’s second memoir of her desperate attempts to counteract her mood swings by self-starvation, substance abuse, and self-mutilation, and what it is like to live in a difficult and sometimes beautiful life and marriage.
Mary Martin had a long career as a performer on both Broadway stage and screen in “Peter Pan,” “South Pacific,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” and “The Sound of Music” although she might also be remembered as mother of Larry Hagman, the infamous J. R. Ewing of “Dallas”. Ronald L. Davis has written the first book-length biography of this actress in “Mary Martin – Broadway Legend“.
“Miss Lillian” Carter was a wife and mother, a registered nurse, a university housemother, and at an age when some would consider retirement, a Peace Corps volunteer. Lillian Carter was a woman of many accomplishments and her son Jimmy Carter pays tribute to her in his new book “A Remarkable Mother“.
“Girls Like Us” is a biography of three of the best-known women of popular music – Carole King, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell. The lives of these three very different women are intertwined by author Shelia Weller, covering King’s early career as a songwriter for others (”The Loco-motion”, “One Fine Day”) and success as a solo artist, Mitchell’s interests in folk, jazz and painting, and Simon’s complicated childhood and marriage to singer James Taylor.
May is the month to honor our mom’s or other women who have made a difference in our lives. To that end, we are asking patrons to bring in pictures, mementos, or other items that connect them to these special women for our showcase display. Please label the items and include a description and/or message of gratitude if desired. Thanks for assisting us with this endeavor.
